Class is in session. With festival season in full-swing, you undoubtedly have a lot of questions. What should you wear? What should you bring? Will I get to see everyone? What should I do about schedule conflicts? Well, we won’t be covering any of that. Fine…In rapid succession the answers to the aforementioned questions are as follows: whatever you want that looks awesome; your ticket, goodies, water; no; and cry. We’ll go through the basics of the mainstage and also cover some tracks that you are bound to hear at your destination’s mainstage. Let’s begin.
Basics: Mainstage music has a basic, moving beat that is easily digestible and generally fast-paced. A light show is usually involved, and be prepared to press your body (involuntarily) against the people next to you. There will be weird smells, moisture, and lots of talking/yelling. Dancing is inevitable, and water is more valuable than gold (camelbacks are clutch).
Dancing: Typically (at the mainstage), hands are uplifted, lights are in your face, and dancing is typically more up-and-down, rather than side-to-side or in “twerk”-style. Although you will typically find people grinding swimsuit areas together in plain view (I do this. :P), the majority of festival goers you will see will be dancing in groups with their own personal space. You will be groped, and you will grope others. In a crowd of minimum 10k people, this is unavoidable. Also, quite a few girls will dance from atop shoulders, and therefore, you should watch out for kicks to the face and dropped items from their hands.
Warnings: Watch your heart rates and fluid intake. As most festivals occur outdoors, no one has fun raging next to an unconscious body. You might end up on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, but more likely, you’ll get surrounded by security and paramedics. (This is no bueno.)
You might end up losing your group because someone hot is chatting you up, but don’t worry – GENERALLY the people at festivals are friendly, sweet, and helpful. Make friends, rage with new people, and you’ll find your friends again…eventually.
Common traits of mainstage music: Long, involved builds with iconic or unique samples that excite and entrance the audience. The drop is generally synth-laden, bass-fueled, and loud. Sparklers/fireworks/lasers will accompany the entire set, and generally, you’ll move in a fit of euphoria, rather than have your face melted off.
